Three out of three: MGML succeeds in the Open Science II Mini-Projects call

Petr Čermák’s team succeeded with all three submitted projects in the Open Science II Mini-Projects call. LaueDB and PP2FAIR received the maximum score of 85 points, while DanCE was supported with 81 points. Over the coming months, the projects will deliver new tools and data outputs for FAIR management of physics and materials-science data: a database of Laue diffraction images, an open-source converter for physical-property measurements, and an exemplary DANTEcore dataset linked to published research on magnetic structures.

ILL Scientific Members’ Meeting 2026

On June 18-19, 2026, the annual meeting of the Scientific Members and Associates of the Institute Laue-Langevin (ILL, Grenoble, France) was held at the Institute of Physics in London, UK. The Czech Republic was represented by our colleague Milan Klicpera, who joined delegates from ten Scientific Member countries in discussions on the current and future activities of ILL. The programme focused on scientific, technical, and strategic developments at the institute, including the advancement of experimental infrastructure and the long-term direction of ILL following the approved extension of its operation until 2033.

Andrej Cabala Received the Award of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic

Andrej Cabala, a student at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, and a member of the research team led by RNDr. Michal Vališka, Ph.D. at our department, has received the Award of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic for University Students for 2026.

The Magnetism Group studies physical phenomena originating from the behavior of electrons in matter. Throughout the group, we prepare and study a range of materials ranging from: lanthanoid and uranium-based intermetallics, magnetic-shape-memory Heusler alloys, and frustrated magnetic oxides, to van der Waal and misfit layer materials. Using both our range of preparation and crystal growth facilities, as well as our extensive suite of properties measurements instruments, we are steadily building bridges-of-understanding linking the electronic structure of this wide range of materials to the observed magnetic and electronic properties. We also investigate the tuning of these properties using both high-magnetic fields and high pressures.
