Miroslav Šlouf » Thermoplastic starch: the interplay among structure, morphology, crystallinity, mechanical performance, rhelogy, and processing properties

Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, Czech Academy of Sciences

Location: KFKL seminar room, F052

In the presentation, we will briefly discuss the technical and medical applications of biodegradable polymers. Then we will focus our attention on the most widely used biopolymer - starch. We will explain briefly why the starch must be plasticized for great majority of its applications.

In more detail, we will explain why the optimal plasticization protocol is necessary for our target application - stable solid state system with controlled local release of antibiotics to treat strong local infections in orthopedic surgery. Finally, we will show some of our recent results that illustrate the complex relations between thermoplastic starch structure (including its crystallinity), properties, and processing.
