Structure of materials research
The field of structure of
materials is concerned with the study of the internal structure of materials and
the way in which this affects the properties of the material. It is an
interdisciplinary field that draws on knowledge from disciplines such as
physics, chemistry, and engineering.
The main goal of structure analysis is to determine the atomic-level structure of materials. This can be done using a variety of techniques, including transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and neutron diffraction. Once the atomic-level structure is known, it is possible to calculate the properties of the material, such as its strength, ductility, and electrical and thermal conductivity.
Applications
