On December 7, the dean’s prize for the best bachelor thesis was awarded to our user Kateřina (Katka) Tetalová. In her thesis with the title “Morphology and physical properties of misfit layer compound VPbS3“, she focused on the properties of cleaved surfaces and exfoliated flakes. She performed detailed atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies to show the surface stability and the possibility to exfoliate single or few-layer flakes on SiOx and fresh Au surfaces.

Misfit layered compounds (MLC) are naturally grown van der Waals (vdW) super-lattices consisting of an alternating structure of layers (in this case VS2 and PbS) with incommensurate in-plane lattice parameters. The attractiveness of the MLCs is that each layer has different material properties combined in natural vdW multilayers [1].
